OF INTEREST: POSTCARDS FROM THE ROAD

Exhibition by photojournalists Donald Pinnock and Justin Fox
Montebello Gallery Newlands Cape Town

Last week amongst the chores of a Cape Town trip, we went to see an exhibition at the Montebello Gallery in Newlands, which transformed our day. We were touched and enriched by the images and text presented. They captured in an understated way the inner and outer, personal and social realities of the world in which we live. We recommend you visit if you are in the Cape Town area. Below are excerpts from the introduction to the work and some examples of images and texts on display,

T-shirt house, Lucira, AngolaI asked why their home was so pretty. They said it was because the shirts were all different colours. ‘They were donated to keep us warm. But Angola is hot and we need shade more than warmth,’ a woman said as she cut up another T-shirt.
Through a window, Budapest, HungarySomething had happened. One had a broken heart, the other was strong and supportive. Maybe. There’sa man in the picture, vaguely. What was his part in it? I’ll never know. I was on a balcony above, caught the moment and clicked. Did she see me? Did it heal? Budapest is so far away.

Wild fire, Table Mountain, Cape TownIt is intimate and universal. It lives in our heart, in the sky. It rises from the depths of the substance and offers itself with the warmth of love or flames of fear. Or it curls down into the substance and hides there, pent-up, like hate and vengeance.
“In Postcards from the Road, the works of (Justin) Fox and (Donald) Pinnock have taken a journey of their own, from their home in travel photojournalism into the neighbouring country of fine art..... What has resulted is a collection of works, presented as postcards – correspondence from the journeys of the photographers, but also a document of the collaborative journey undertaken.
